Frequently asked questions about Co-travel discount

You share a co-travel code with the person you want to travel with.

This is how you give a discount:

1. Log in to My NS.
2. On your dashboard you will see a block 'Co-travel discount'.
3. Select 'Share code'.
4. You will see the code on the next screen.
5. Send the code to your fellow traveller.

Your fellow traveller will receive your message and can use the code for 3 days to order a train ticket. Or to link Co-travel discount in Mijn NS to one of these season tickets: NS Flex Basis, NS Flex Weekend Voordeel or NS Flex Weekend Vrij. It is also possible to go to an NS service desk together.

When checking your ticket, the conductor will see that you are travelling together. Also, don't forget your proof of identity to show that it's really you.

Only with NS Flex Basis, NS Flex Weekend Voordeel or NS Flex Weekend Vrij can you receive a Co-travel discount. You have an NS Flex season ticket if you pay for your travels afterwards.

An NS account is always linked to one customer number. You will receive a message if the NS account you are logged in to does not match your customer number. Maybe you are in our system multiple times, under different customer numbers?

No, you can't. Ask another NS season ticket holder or student with Student travel product to share a co-travel code with you.

No, you can give away unlimited co-travel codes. Also, as a fellow traveller, you can travel with Co-travel discount as often as you want.

Yes. But, you can only take a maximum of 3 fellow travellers with you.

You get a co-travel code from the NS season ticket holder or student you want to travel with.

This is how you will receive a discount:

1. Follow the link in the message. For example in your e-mail box or WhatsApp.
2. Open the NS app or ns.nl.
3. Use the code and select the 'Use code' button.
4. Choose your ticket.
5. Buy a Samenreisticket Dal in our webshop or log in to Mijn NS to use the code for your NS Flex season ticket. These can be: NS Flex Basis, NS Flex Weekend Voordeel or NS Flex Weekend Vrij.
6. Prefer not to buy your ticket online? It is still possible to put Co-travel discount on your OV-chipkaart at an NS service desk. Go to the counter together with the NS season ticket holder.

When checking your ticket, the conductor will see that you are travelling together. Also, don't forget your proof of identity to show that it's really you.

Follow the link in the message you received from an NS season ticker holder or student with Student travel product. Use the co-travel code and choose 'I want a train ticket' to order a ticket in our webshop.  

Then choose: 

• The route 
• Single or day return 
• Travel date 
• How many tickets you want 
• Class 

Train tickets are personal. That is why you fill in the names of the traveler(s) below. Finally you pay with iDEAL or credit card. After payment you can download the tickets in the NS app or print them.

Only with NS Flex Basis, NS Flex Weekend Voordeel or NS Flex Weekend Vrij can you receive a Co-travel discount. You have an NS Flex season ticket if you pay for your travels afterwards.

Since 22 April 2024, you will only be able to receive a Co-travel discount by means of a co-travel code from a season ticket holder or a student with a Student travel product. You can arrange the discount at ns.nl or through the NS app.

If you prefer not to purchase your ticket online,  you will still be able to arrange a Co-travel discount at an NS Service Desk. Simply go to the Service Desk with the NS season ticket holder.

Make sure to bring the following:

• Proof of identification
• Your OV-chipkaart if you have an NS season ticket

Please note: if you as a recipient have an NS Flex season ticket, you cannot go to the NS Service Desk. Instead, you will have to arrange your Co-travel discount through Mijn NS on our website.

You will travel at 40% discount in off-peak hours and on weekends + public holidays.

During off-peak hours
Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm and 6.30pm to 6.30am.
Note: Co-travel discount is valid untill 4am the next day.

On weekends + public holidays
All day.

Please note: You will not get a Co-travel discount with a train ticket if you are on the train during rush hour. Not even if you are checked in during off-peak hours. Are you travelling with an NS Flex season ticket? Then the moment you check in applies. So you might check in during off-peak hours and still be on the train during rush hour.

Are you travelling with a train ticket? Then you are not allowed on the train during rush hours; your ticket is not valid. Leave the train or buy a valid ticket in the NS app or on ns.nl.

Do you check in during off-peak hours with a NS Flex Basic, NS Flex Weekend Voordeel or NS Flex Weekend Vrij season ticket? Then you can stay on the train when the rush hour starts. The moment you check in is what counts.

You can use the Co-travel discount for travel in the Netherlands.

Co-travel discount:

• Intercity direct (ICD supplement)
• Foreign part of the ICE International route (ICE supplement), IC Brussels and IC Berlin
• Foreign routes passing stations with OV-chipkaart posts (e.g. Aachen, Weener and Bentheim)

No co-travel discount:

• Foreign part of the route
• International train services that require reservations (e.g. Nightjet and Eurostar)

You only have to stop Co-travel discount yourself if you continue travelling alone on the same day with your NS Flex season ticket.

Train ticket (Samenreisticket Dal):
The discount applies as long as the train ticket is valid. And you travel together with the season ticket holder in the same train compartment.

NS Flex Basis, NS Flex Weekend Voordeel or NS Flex Weekend Vrij season ticket:
The discount stops automatically at 4am the next day.

Travelling alone again?
Are you travelling alone with a train ticket? Then buy a ticket for the route on which you are no longer travelling together.
Follow the steps below if you have Co-travel discount linked to your NS Flex season ticket:

1. Check out at a carrier gate or pole.
2. Stop Co-travel discount in Mijn NS.
3. Check in again with your OV-chipkaart. You travel at full fare.
