At the station
If you travel with a physical disability, it is not only pleasant to know how accessible the station is; it is absolutely necessary. Which facilities are available at the station for travellers with a disability? This page tells you all about what to expect at the station when you travel with a disability.
Accessibility of the station and platform
- Step-free platforms: Almost every station in the Netherlands has step-free access via a lift or ramp.
- Gates: If the station is only accessible via gates, there is always a wider gate for wheelchairs and mobility scooters.
- Platform height: ProRail is working to raise platforms to align with the train. Check an overview of accessible stations where NS trains stop.
Use the NS app if it is possible to make your journey independently or if you need to request Travel Assistance in advance.
Purchasing a ticket
Get your ticket at an NS ticket machine or service desk. Pay with cash or card – no extra fee applies at the service desk.
All NS ticket machines support contactless payment and are wheelchair accessible. Over fifty stations have machines with a wheelchair mode for topping up your balance. Tap the wheelchair symbol, and the buttons move to the lower half of the screen for easy use.
If, due to a disability, you cannot travel independently on public transport, you can travel with an OV-Begeleiderskaart, which allows one companion to travel with you for free on the train, metro, tram, and bus.
NS Service and Alarm Pole
All NS stations have service and emergency poles where you can ask an NS employee for information, available day and night. These poles also have braille signage. In case of an emergency, you can use the SOS button on the NS Service and Alarm Pole.
